I have made no secret of my love of dogs, and in truth I’m still mourning the loss of Henry, my old hound, who we lost in April. Even though I have had dogs (and various other creatures) all my life there are no plans as yet to adopt a new companion, so for now I’m contenting myself with vicariously enjoying other people’s pets as and when the opportunity arises.
But when the time comes a front-runner is the beautiful and sweet-natured Whippet, particularly after having had an especially charming one as a house guest for a few weeks last year. So when I was recently asked to donate a print of Tentative Greetings for a charity auction by i heart whippets I was more than happy to oblige. The auction runs from 1st to 8th November – if you love dogs then why not pop over to the Auction Facebook Page where all the goodies can be seen and you can bid in the comments section.
The print I have contributed depicts the initial meeting of a hound and a hare, two creatures that are often seen as natural enemies. Yet, there are enough examples of friendships across different species, both in domestic and wild settings, that would suggest that there are particular contexts for enmity which are not always natural. Blood sports is a primary example. But this painting is a celebration of the capacity and need of many animals for friendship, just like the many rescue Whippets and Greyhounds that this auction will be helping. A worthwhile cause indeed.
The artwork in the auction is printed on A4 (21cm x 29.7cm) Archival paper, and the image is 23cm x 14.6cm as it is mounted and ready to frame.
Handmade on Amazon
My artwork, in the form of prints and cards, is now available on Amazon’s new store, Handmade on Amazon, which features the work of Artisans of all feathers. If you are looking for a gift that is a little different to add to your Christmas shopping basket then why not consider one of these creaturely creations…
